How much must I raise my body out of the water surface in breastrstroke?
During the inhaling stage, how much must I raise my body out of the water? I have seen some swimmers raising almost up to the chest level while some simply only at the chin level.
I must say raising just up to the chin level seems graceful and not so intense. Any comments?
It depends how fast you want go to and whether you want to conserve energy.
For recreational swimming it is fine to breathe without having to lift your chest out of the water. You will not go as fast since this prevents you from pulling as much water and it is more resistant. However you can swim this style of breaststroke for longer periods without getting tired too quickly.
Raising your chest above the water is the result of proper pulling technique which maximises your efficiency, power and ensures you are moving through the water with the least resistance. This is necessary for competitive swimming or if you are sprinting during your own fitness exercise. This style requires more energy and thus looks more intense.
